What do I do if I suspect identity theft?

I have an unusual name and it so happens that in a phone directory search my name shows up with an address near my workplace. I live almost 2 hours from my job. That person also same age as me. Is there any way of finding out if in fact there was identity theft?

First thing — do this today: check your credit reports. It will list any credit card applications, accounts, etc made in your name / social security number.
Here’s the official guide from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission:

Get copies of your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies and check to see if there is anything on any of them that you did not know about. That might be a good place to start.

if i were you, i would first contact any major companies that you deal with…. like your bank and any credit card company’s you deal with- once you contact them, ask them if you could receive a print out of all activities that were done lately and then match them up to your own activities…. by doing this you will see if there is any unusual activities on your accounts. If there is, then immediately re contact the bank, credit card companys..ect.ect.. tell them the situation and have them all cancelled and get new ones…. then contact the police and from there they will guide you the rest of the way.
