Identity theft?

bucknut71 asked:

I have to do a research paper for school. I chose to do mine on identity theft. It needs to be argumentitive. Can anyone give me ideas for a subtopic on identity theft? The topic itself is too large. Any areas of identity theft that concerns you the most?

Yes – having to prove who you are once someone has acquired your identity.

I recently received a letter from my water utility company addressed to someone else at my address welcoming them to my address.

I then phoned the water company and asked them what was going on and they said they had closed down my account because they had received a letter from a local letting agent stating that this imposter was then new tenant of my property. I then had to reopen my account and set up a direct debit all over again.

I went up to the letting agent’s office with proof of that I was the legal owner of my property and asked them who the imposter was and what was going on. They said they had never heard of him.

It turned out a few weeks later that the letting agent did let a property to this guy but they supplied the wrong address to the water company.

How does identity theft differ from (credit card) fraud?
