It’s not really that easy unless you carry your social security card in your wallet.
Use common sense like:
- Don’t give out SS# out to anyone and don’t carry your SS# card in your wallet
- shred all important documents before throwing away
- Check your credit report at least once a year for signs of trouble. annualcreditreport.com is the real free site to check your credit file for free once a year.
NOT freecreditreport.com -

If your are very concerned, then sign up with a monthly credit monitoring program through Equifax.

You could sign up for lifelock.
Or just call equifax and have them put restrictions on your credit. Then they have to call you prior to allowing any company from pulling it, to verify you want them to see it. Just make sure you give them a cell phone number and don’t forget to call them if you change your phone number or it becomes a mess.

you can’t be 100% protected. just keep checking things like accounts and your credit report

For starters: Don’t carry all of your important documents in one wallet.
Your social security card… belongs at home in a safe spot.
Your credit card only moves into the wallet when you intend to use it for shopping, etc.
Always make photocopies of any important documents and keep them in a safe spot at home.
That includes drivers license, social security card and all of your debit and credit cards.
You would be amazed how many people don’t know their 16 digit credit card number by heart… (I am one of them… why on earth would I know this?) But a police report is necessary and you need to know these minor details when you call your credit card company and call the card in lost or stolen.
Knowing the phone number would help of course, too.
